Your next step depends heavily on what you were doing in the app when the crash happened.
Were you waiting for a request, driving to pick someone up, or already on a trip? That can change which coverage may apply.
What about damage to my car?
For Uber rideshare, qualifying vehicle-damage coverage may apply after you accept a ride if you carry comprehensive and collision coverage on your personal policy. Uber currently lists a $2,500 deductible.
Lyft also lists contingent comprehensive and collision coverage with a $2,500 deductible while picking up a passenger or during a ride, if you carry personal comprehensive and collision.
Waiting for a request can be different.
What if I was injured?
Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may help with injuries caused by a hit-and-run driver — but rideshare UM/UIM coverage varies by state. Do not assume it applies everywhere.
What should I save?
If it's safe:
- Report the hit-and-run to police.
- Save the police report number.
- Photograph the damage and accident scene.
- Save screenshots showing your trip and app status.
- Write down the time and location.
- Report the accident through the rideshare app.
The exact app status can become very important later.
