Why Was My Insurance Claim Sent to SIU?

SIU stands for Special Investigative Unit. A referral means more investigation, not a finding of fraud.

Last updated · Fact-checked · 2 min read

An SIU referral means the claim is receiving additional fraud-related investigation. It does not itself establish that fraud occurred.

Insurers use these units to look into claims where fraud is suspected. In California, for example, licensed insurers are required by law to maintain units that identify and refer suspected insurance fraud.

What an SIU does

Insurance investigators handle claims where the company suspects fraudulent or criminal activity. The key word is suspects: a referral starts a closer look. It does not decide the outcome.

This page does not list reasons claims get referred. We have not found an authoritative source for that, and a guess would not tell you anything about your claim.

What you can do

  • Ask what information or documents are still needed, and keep copies of everything you send.
  • Ask who is handling the claim now and how to reach them.
  • If you are unsure of your rights, consider getting legal advice. When a lawyer may be worth it.
