Do Uber and Lyft Drivers Get Paid Sick Leave in New York?

Yes, for passenger rides. It's an earnings protection, not insurance - and it's separate from the Black Car Fund.

Yes. Under the New York Attorney General's settlement with Uber and Lyft, drivers earn paid sick leave for passenger rides in New York: one hour for every 30 hours worked, up to 56 hours a year.

This isn't insurance. It's money you may be able to use while you can't drive.

How it adds up

  • 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked
  • Work time runs from accepting a rider's request through drop-off
  • Up to 56 hours a year - about seven days

How much is it worth?

It depends on the trip. New York City TLC-covered trips and non-TLC trips use different sick-pay formulas, and both are adjusted over time - so we don't quote a dollar rate that could already be out of date.

Passenger rides only

This settlement benefit covers passenger rides. It doesn't cover delivery work, such as Uber Eats.

If you're hurt and off the road

Paid sick leave sits alongside anything you claim through the Black Car Fund. Different system, different pot of money - worth knowing about both.
