What Evidence Should I Save After an Uber or Lyft Accident?

When it is safe, save photos, contact and insurance details, the police-report number if there is one, and your trip/app-status information. Then report through the appropriate platform channel.

When it is safe, save photos, contact and insurance details, the police-report number if there is one, and your trip/app-status information. Then report through the appropriate platform channel.

These records can help establish what happened and which activity was underway. No single photo, screenshot or trip record conclusively determines coverage or fault. Safety comes before collecting evidence.

A short first-hour checklist

  1. Photograph damage to the vehicles involved, including your own. Capture what you can safely see rather than putting yourself in traffic for a better image.
  2. Photograph the accident location when safe. Keep the scene context with the damage pictures.
  3. Collect contact and insurance information from the other involved drivers or riders. Save it somewhere you can find again.
  4. Save the police-report number if a report exists. A report number is useful even if you do not yet have the completed report.
  5. Preserve the trip record and available app-status screenshots showing waiting, en-route or on-trip activity. Records may change when a trip ends or the app refreshes.
  6. Report through the proper platform channel: Uber’s Driver app or Lyft’s accident-report process.

Video can be part of the record

Where available, Uber allows dashcam or Record My Ride evidence to be attached to incident or insurance reports. Preserve an existing recording if you have one; the absence of video does not by itself answer the coverage or fault question.

Keep the records together

Save the claim reference, report number and supporting files together. They help you explain the timeline without relying only on memory when a platform, insurer or claims representative follows up.

This is an evidence checklist, not a guarantee that every item will be available or that collecting it produces a particular outcome. Do not describe an app record as proof that settles every coverage question; policy terms, other evidence and claim circumstances still matter.
