Uber & Lyft · Damage to your car

Does Uber or Lyft Insurance Cover Damage to My Car?

Sometimes. It depends on your app status and on coverage you have to carry yourself.

Only in part of the trip. Uber's and Lyft's coverage for your own car applies once you accept a ride, through drop-off - and only if you already carry comprehensive and collision on your personal policy.

When it applies, it can pay to repair or replace your car up to its actual cash value, minus a $2,500 deductible.

By app status

  • App off. Your personal policy applies. Uber's and Lyft's rideshare coverage doesn't.
  • Online, waiting for a request. Uber doesn't maintain comprehensive or collision coverage for your car in this window. Lyft's published coverage for this period is third-party liability, not contingent comprehensive and collision.
  • Accepted, driving to pickup or on the trip. Contingent comprehensive and collision can cover your car up to its actual cash value, if you carry those coverages personally.

Two conditions that catch drivers

  • You need comprehensive and collision yourself. If you carry liability only, the platform coverage for your car never starts.
  • Your personal policy may exclude app-on driving. Most personal policies exclude driving with the app on unless you've added rideshare coverage.

The $2,500 deductible

Uber and Lyft both apply a $2,500 deductible to coverage for your own car. That figure is set by the platforms, not by any state. Lyft publishes different arrangements in Arizona, Nebraska and Maryland.

Delivering instead?

Delivery works differently. Uber's delivery coverage doesn't pay to repair your own car, and neither does DoorDash's.
