Uber & Uber Eats · Rides vs. delivery

Is Uber Eats Insurance Different From Uber Rideshare Insurance?

Yes. The biggest difference is what happens to your own car.

Yes. Uber says rideshare trips and delivery trips are insured under separate policies, and your coverage depends on which kind of trip you were on.

The biggest difference is your own car. Uber's delivery coverage doesn't pay to repair your vehicle during any period of a delivery. Uber rideshare coverage can pay for your car after you accept a ride - but only if you carry comprehensive and collision on your personal policy.

Your own car, side by side

Uber rideshare

Contingent comprehensive and collision may apply once you accept a ride, through the trip, if you carry those coverages personally. A $2,500 deductible applies.

Uber Eats (delivery)

Uber-maintained coverage does not pay to repair your own car during any period of a delivery.

What about before I accept a ride?

Uber describes its rideshare vehicle-damage coverage as applying when you are en route to or on a trip. While you're online waiting for a request, Uber doesn't maintain comprehensive or collision coverage for your car.

With the app off, you're an ordinary private driver and your personal policy applies.

Damage you cause to others

Liability coverage is a different story. On deliveries, Uber's third-party liability insurance may cover injury or damage you cause to someone else, depending on your state and whether you were online, en route or on a trip. Uber says delivery coverages and limits vary by state.

If you do both

What matters is what you were doing in the app at the moment of the crash. Save your trip details and app status, and check whether your personal policy covers delivery, not just rideshare.
