Do I Need Special Car Insurance to Drive for DoorDash?

DoorDash does not require a special policy beyond valid personal auto insurance, but your own policy may exclude delivery work.

Last updated · Fact-checked · 3 min read

DoorDash requires Dashers who use a vehicle to maintain valid personal auto insurance that meets applicable state minimums. DoorDash says it does not require special or additional insurance just to dash.

That platform requirement is different from whether your personal policy actually covers a delivery accident or damage to your own car. Ask your insurer about delivery activity and the specific stages of work.

What DoorDash requires

DoorDash says vehicle Dashers need valid personal auto insurance meeting the minimum requirements in their state. It does not make a commercial auto policy or a special add-on a universal condition of dashing. State insurance rules and your insurer’s contract can still affect what protection you need.

Your car is a separate question

DoorDash-maintained auto insurance is primarily third-party liability. It does not pay to repair the Dasher’s own vehicle. DoorDash warns that many personal policies are written for personal use and may exclude damage during delivery activity. A personal policy that includes delivery work or a commercial auto policy may provide protection, depending on its terms.

A rideshare endorsement may not cover an active DoorDash delivery. DoorDash gives an example of an add-on that helps while waiting but stops when a delivery begins. Confirm delivery coverage with the insurer rather than assuming a rideshare label is enough.

When DoorDash liability applies

For the “All Other US States” category, DoorDash says its third-party liability coverage applies during the Delivery Service Period after an order is accepted. While online but before accepting an order, the Dasher’s personal auto insurance is primary. DoorDash lists separate terms for Boston, North Dakota, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia; this national summary does not replace them.
