What Does DoorDash Auto Insurance Cover After an Accident?

It depends on whether you had accepted an order - and DoorDash's coverage never pays for your own car.

Last updated · Fact-checked · 3 min read

DoorDash's auto insurance protects other people, not your car. From the moment you accept an order through delivery, DoorDash provides coverage for injury or damage you cause to others.

While you're online waiting for offers, DoorDash says it provides no liability coverage and your personal insurance is primary.

When DoorDash's coverage applies

DoorDash works differently from Uber and Lyft. There are two states of play, not three:

  • Order accepted, through delivery. Once you accept an order, until it is delivered, cancelled or unassigned, DoorDash provides third-party liability coverage for harm you cause to other people.
  • Online, waiting for offers. DoorDash's own page says it provides no liability coverage in this window, and your personal insurance is primary.

How much coverage is it?

DoorDash's “All Other US States” rule doesn't publish a coverage amount, so we aren't quoting one. A widely repeated $1,000,000 figure comes from DoorDash's marketing page, not its state-specific terms.

Does this apply in my state?

DoorDash lists separate terms for Boston, North Dakota, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia. Every other US state follows DoorDash's “All Other US States” rule - the one described on this page.

None of those exceptions is a state ClaimedUp covers, so all 11 of our states follow the “All Other US States” rule.

What about damage to my own car?

DoorDash's insurance does not cover damage to your own vehicle at any point. DoorDash says those damages are your responsibility and go to your own insurer, subject to what your policy covers.

Don't assume your insurer will pay. DoorDash warns that a rideshare add-on may not give complete coverage while you deliver - for example, covering your vehicle before you accept an order but not during an active delivery. When you call your insurer, ask about delivery specifically.

If you were hurt

Injuries are a separate question. DoorDash's occupational accident policy is separate injury coverage for Dashers. It is not auto insurance, and it does not pay for your car.
