What Insurance Comes With a Lyft Flexdrive Rental?

Flexdrive is an approved Lyft Express Drive rental, but coverage depends on the app period, state and rental agreement.

Last updated · Fact-checked · 3 min read

Flexdrive is part of Lyft’s Express Drive program. Its rentals are approved for Lyft driving, but there is no single insurance answer for personal use with the app off, waiting for a request, and en route or on a trip.

Lyft documents an ordinary $1,000 Flexdrive physical-damage deductible where that coverage applies. Personal-use coverage, coverage priority and damage charges depend on the state, rental agreement and any applicable protection plan.

Coverage changes with app status

For personal driving with the Lyft app off, check the insurance and priority rules in the Flexdrive agreement for your state. Waiting for a request and driving en route or on a trip involve different Lyft insurance stages. The normal rideshare third-party liability rules and verified state exceptions still matter; do not carry an active-trip limit into an offline accident.

Flexdrive vehicle-damage protection may respond up to the vehicle’s actual cash value or repair cost, subject to program terms. Lyft’s ordinary Flexdrive physical-damage deductible is $1,000 where that coverage applies. This is not a promise that the same deductible or priority applies to every loss or market.

Protection plans and deposits

Optional Flexdrive protection plans are not insurance. They may reduce accidental-damage charges, depending on the plan and market; availability and pricing vary. Lyft says outstanding damage charges may reduce or consume an Express Drive deposit. Whether a charge is owed depends on the rental agreement, fault and damage determination, and applicable protection plan.

What happens after an accident?

Report a collision to Lyft through its official accident-report process. If a damaged Flexdrive vehicle is drivable, return and report it to the Flexdrive pickup branch; if it cannot be driven, use Flexdrive roadside assistance. The vehicle may be inspected or temporarily removed from service while damage is reviewed. Routine maintenance follows the program’s maintenance instructions instead of replacing accident reporting. Do not assume a replacement vehicle or continued rental eligibility.

ClaimedUp documentation tip

Document the rental before you leave. Take dated photos or a quick walk-around video at pickup showing the body, wheels, windshield and interior, including any existing scratches or dents. Take another set when you return or exchange the vehicle. If you keep the same rental for several weeks, periodic photos can give you a clearer record of its condition over time. These records are useful context, not conclusive proof or a guaranteed dispute outcome.
