A rental valid for ordinary personal use is not automatically approved for Uber or Lyft work. For Uber, a rental used on the platform must be part of an approved partnership; an unapproved rental can lead to permanent deactivation. Lyft has its own approved Express Drive rental program. An unrelated consumer rental is not automatically authorized for Lyft work.
Choose a program that expressly permits the rideshare driving you plan to do, then read that program’s rental agreement and insurance terms.
Uber driver rentals versus Uber Rent
Uber’s driver Vehicle Marketplace offers approved rental and leasing options in participating cities. Uber Rent is a consumer booking product with different terms. Its current terms describe reservations for non-commercial, non-rideshare and non-delivery purposes, and require users to warrant they maintain personal auto insurance covering rented vehicles. The third-party rental provider’s agreement ultimately governs the rental or carsharing terms.
Lyft approved rentals
Lyft Express Drive offers approved vehicles through rental partners such as Flexdrive and Hertz. Program and partner availability vary by market. Express Drive also permits personal driving, subject to the partner’s mileage and agreement terms. This does not make an ordinary rental automatically eligible for Lyft.
If the rental is damaged
Report a rideshare crash through the applicable platform process and follow the rental partner’s accident or roadside instructions. A drivable car may need inspection; a disabled car may need roadside help. Routine maintenance and accident damage follow different procedures. The vehicle may be removed from service while reviewed; no replacement or continued eligibility is promised.
Damage responsibility and any charge depend on the rental agreement, fault or damage determination, and any applicable protection plan. A platform report may not satisfy every partner reporting requirement.
Document the rental before you leave. Take dated photos or a quick walk-around video at pickup showing the body, wheels, windshield and interior, including any existing scratches or dents. Take another set when you return or exchange the vehicle. If you keep the same rental for several weeks, periodic photos can give you a clearer record of its condition over time. These records are useful context, not conclusive proof or a guaranteed dispute outcome.
