Can I Use a Rental Car to Drive for Uber?

A normal rental is not automatically eligible for Uber; use a rental booked through an approved Uber partnership.

Uber says a rental vehicle used on its platform must be part of an approved partnership. It warns that using an unapproved rental can lead to permanent deactivation.

Approved rental or leasing options are offered through Uber’s Vehicle Marketplace in participating cities. Hertz and Avis are examples of partners, but an arbitrary rental from either company does not automatically qualify.

Where approval comes from

Use the Uber Vehicle Marketplace or another Uber-approved partner program to find an eligible vehicle. Market availability and partner terms vary. The rental agreement still governs fees, insurance and allowed use; a car being rentable for personal travel is not proof that it can be used for Uber trips.

Uber Rent is different

Uber Rent is a consumer rental-booking product, not the driver Vehicle Marketplace. Its current terms describe non-commercial, non-rideshare and non-delivery reservations. Do not treat an Uber Rent booking as approval to carry Uber passengers.

If there is an accident

Report an applicable crash to Uber through its required crash-reporting channel and follow the rental partner’s accident and roadside instructions too. A drivable vehicle may need partner inspection; a disabled vehicle may need the partner’s roadside process. An accident is separate from routine maintenance or existing damage. The vehicle may be temporarily removed from service while damage is reviewed; do not assume a replacement or continued eligibility.

Read the partner agreement for damage responsibility and any protection plan. A charge is not automatic merely because a crash was reported. Keep partner and Uber report confirmations separately; one report does not necessarily substitute for the other.

ClaimedUp documentation tip

Document the rental before you leave. Take dated photos or a quick walk-around video at pickup showing the body, wheels, windshield and interior, including any existing scratches or dents. Take another set when you return or exchange the vehicle. If you keep the same rental for several weeks, periodic photos can give you a clearer record of its condition over time. These records are useful context, not conclusive proof or a guaranteed dispute outcome.

Coverage can vary by state.
